Microplastics Release from Conventional Plastics during Real Open Windrow Composting

چکیده

The recycling of bio-waste plays an important role in a circular economy as it transforms into valuable resource (organic fertilizer). However, even separately collected can contain some plastic waste, which is usually separated after composting and not before it. Primary studies have confirmed the degradation during composting, but release microplastics from them has been studied. This article presents quantification comparison commonly used plastics green waste composting. Microplastics were identified by Nile red staining examination under fluorescent microscope. Plastic was assessed weight loss calculation, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. On average, 17 to 52 microplastics’ are released 5-by-5 cm pieces conventional control polylactic acid sample showed smallest amount microplastics: four particles on average. number depended polymer type thickness samples. results current be further for prediction microplastic generation setting limit content

Microbial Abundances Predict Methane and Nitrous Oxide Fluxes from a Windrow Composting System

Manure composting is a significant source of atmospheric methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) that are two potent greenhouse gases. The CH4 and N2O fluxes are mediated by methanogens and methanotrophs, nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria in composting manure, respectively, while these specific bacterial functional groups may interplay in CH4 and N2O emissions during manure composting. To test...

Quantification of greenhouse gas emissions from windrow composting of garden waste.

Microbial degradation of organic wastes entails the production of various gases such as carbon dioxide (CO(2)), methane (CH(4)), nitrous oxide (N(2)O), and carbon monoxide (CO). Some of these gases are classified as greenhouse gases (GHGs), thus contributing to climate change. A study was performed to evaluate three methods for quantifying GHG emissions from central composting of garden waste. ...

Plastics and microplastics in the oceans: From emerging pollutants to emerged threat.

Plastic production has increased dramatically worldwide over the last 60 years and it is nowadays recognized as a serious threat to the marine environment. Plastic pollution is ubiquitous, but quantitative estimates on the global abundance and weight of floating plastics are still limited, particularly for the Southern Hemisphere and the more remote regions. Some large-scale convergence zones o...
